Well, not with my father anyway.

Just had him on the phone claiming that selling my car will destroy any chances of having a relationship with the opposite sex. He is of the opinion that a car is necessary for taking women out on dates, he thinks a car is essential in today's world full stop. In my experience with dating, myself and the woman have made our own way to venues and met up there, so I don't think the lack of a car is a significant issue. The question is, is it worth bothering trying to convince him otherwise or just listen politely and do my own thing?

I think what is possibly at the root of it is that he ultimately wants me to get married and produce grandchildren, and being car free is going to knock that on the head.

If someone is put off you because you don't have a car then why would you want to be with such a shallow person anyway?

This (the bit in bold).
Keep it sweet. Respect your dad, I'm sure he means well - but do your own thing.
Better still, date a woman whose already got a car. Result!

Your dad is right ..... Cars are a fact of life for the majority of people. We may wish it otherwise ..... But they are required in todays world.

Does your father drive his own car? If not, he is possibly worrying that his mobility will be restricted if you have no transport and are unable to take him to and fro.

Simply untrue - I have never driven and I know at least 20 people who haven't either.

There are approximately 1 billion motor vehicles in the world which is only about 1 per 7 people.
