So now the nights are starting to get a bit longer and will do when the clocks change just wondered if anyone's into fishing. I am, especially if I can go and get some piece and quiet and have a couple of tinnies. So this year I'm going to convert my mountain bike so I can ride out and go for a fish. Does anyone else ride with any fishing kit on board and how do you attach your rod / kit to your bike?

Many of the blokes who fish off the beach here seem to arrive by bike - they just seem to carry their rod on their shoulders.

I've just bought some panniers so should be more than enough space for the kit. The main concern is the rod as I've got several different sizes, the easiest to carry are the telescopic ones but I'm lucky enough to live near one of the best fishing beaches (Chesil Dorset) but that requires a two piece rod. I've attached it to the crossbar with cable ties before bit have seen some specialised bike rod holders but they only seem to be available in the US.

My Hardy is four pieces so fitting the rod isn't much of a problem. The rod, reel one slow sink line and spool and a box of flies. The rest in a waistcoat. I don't even need an extra bag! The landing net is the only problem and even that folds.

I go beach fishing and used to use a bike. Rod and tripod bagged and strapped to my top tube and tackle in panniers. That was fine for daytime. For night sessions I carried far more gear, including Tilley lamps and fuel for them, and in winter a beach shelter or large brolly. For these sessions I used my trailer behind the bike. Now I live too far to cycle to the beach and have to use the car.

I used to go fishing with the rod strapped to the top tube and the tackle box on the rack on my Raleigh chopper can't do that now as I take far to much gear with me

Thinking back, we used to strap the garden digging fork to the top tube to go down to the river at low tide to dig bait. Imagine filling in the risk assessment form for that these days!

I havent been fishing on my bike since I was about 15, around 33 years ago. I think this is due to all the tackle/extra junk you carry as a coarse angler. Thinking about it now, I'd be happy to take lure gear on my bike, just taking the bare minimum of stuff.

Maybe I'll try it later in the Spring !

I use a telescopic rod and take minimal gear if I go fishing by bike. It all fits in the panniers on my hybrid. Anything I catch, that's worth keeping, goes into a shoulder bag for the ride home. It's only 2 miles down the Tarka Trail to a decent mark on the estuary, so it's no hassle.

Take up fly fishing. Not much kit required, 3 and 4 part rods readily available. As @Hugh Manatee says, a waistcoat or a small bag is all that's required .... And a hip flask :-)
