So, having been given these riches, what did exactly did Mary and Joseph do with it?

Open up a new joinery workshop, buy a camel for the ride home, bribe a few Romans to avoid the taxes...

I expect Joseph took the gold down the bookies. Mary asked for the receipts for the frankencence other two things and exchanged them.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

In an entirely symbolic and metaphorical way, they gave the gold to the poor, burned the frankincense while offering prayers, and used the myrrh to embalm a dead body.

I reckon it's probably an aromatic oleoresin of a number of small, thorny tree species of the genus Commiphora, which grow in dry, stony soil. An oleoresin is a natural blend of an essential oil and a resin. Myrrh resin is a natural gum.
