The Gold (symbolising royal wealth), the Frankincense (incense symbolising sacred deity) and the myrrh (an ointment used for embalming and symbolising death) were given to the synagogue at Bethlehem for safe-keeping. In return Mary, Joeseph and baby Jesus were given resources for a safe passage out of Bethlehem, avoiding Herod's bloody grasp.
The 3 gifts are now kept at the Monastery of St Paul at Mount Athos in Greece. How they arrived there is a mystery though it has been suggested that after the crucifixion, Mary returned to take possession, in order to deliver them for permanent safe-keeping to Lazarus. Lazarus, having been raised from the dead was the obvious keeper, symbolising death and life. She was accompanied on her route to visit Lazarus in Cyprus by John the Evangelist. However their ship was blown off course to then pagan Athos. Mary walked ashore and, overwhelmed by the wonderful and wild natural beauty of the mountain, she blessed it and asked Jesus for it to be her garden. From that moment the mountain was consecrated as the garden of the Mother of God and is still out of bounds to all other women. The monastery was built then, and the gifts placed there.
