My question is, can I just swap a 44t chainring for a 40t without having to change anything else except the chain length? I've currently got a 1x11 sram rival chain set.

Providing It has the same BCD (Bolt circle diameter) then I don't see why not

I am constantly changing them on my Singlespeed

OP said it was a 1x11 sram rival chain set. - which a roadie setup I believe

As with an MTB 1x setup, there shouldn't be any ramps or pins on the chainring, but it doesn't need to be a Narrow-Wide chainring, or need a chain device, providing you use a rear mech with a clutch, which I believe the rival has.
