I had a Facebook account a few years ago, decided it wasn't for me, too much rubbish plus I didn't want to know what the kids were up to, but the Cycling Club started using it for posting rides & other info so I am a member again, but its still full of rubbish, I try not to look at other stuff but its hard to resit sometimes, I did find out that an old work mate had died through Facebook, I would have missed his funeral without being a member so it has its uses.

About three people have mentioned the irony of the OP announcing on CC that he has quit FB. Why shouldn't he announce it here, his forum of choice?

CC is not as intrusive as FB, it's not remotely similar, and we are not the product, we are not advertised at.

Unlike FB, there's a good chance that the OP does not know anyone on this site, his post was just a little light hearted banter.

I can't quite see the point of using a false name on FB. What's the benefit? Surely the point of it is to stay in touch with folks you know, how do they find you with an alias?

The irony is wanting to tell people on social media. Deleting (deactivating) your account is very well , but then to make a public show it, just seems to me, rather amusing - ironic. Perhaps it is lost on some.

It's not the same media though is it? Most folks are anonymous on here.

I use Facebook and have used its settings to reduce or eliminate the bulk of drivel posted by some of my friends. Facebook can be fine tuned to meet the users' needs if they can be bothered to explore the settings.

Lesson one to the child before they were allowed on social media.

Because you don't really control it and why you might not want to share penis sandwiches with people there may be stuff you don't want coming back at you. People I care about are told how to find me, I'll find strangers to talk to in different ways.

Being able to access the Internet since the early 90's what amazes me is the number of people willing to spread their personal data over it since FB's origin.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I use it to keep in touch with family, who are all over the world.
Even though my 'friends' list numbers less than 50, I still wish some days I didn't have it!
The thing I hate most are the cryptic posts...FFS, say what you want to say and stop fannying about!

You have less than 50 friends? Bugger I feel like billy no mates now. Think I'll have to find some new friends/ suckers to harrass. Anyone want a friend?

Most are family, and all on my list I have met in person, except 2 people.
Most peoples pages I look at have easily 100+ on their pages, and some have 300+!!!!

I have only just allowed my son access to FB (he's 15 in a couple of weeks) and he is only allowed to add people he knows in person. So his list is short

With having family and friends dotted about it is easy to keep in touch using facebook, on saying that I am 'friends' with someone from primary school, her constant posting of 'me' pictures fascinates, bemuses and amuses me. A good laugh to see someone with a glass in their hands gurning at the camera trying to look really cool and fun.
