I have an Edinburgh bike cyclocross bike with disc brakes for commuting. I use flat pedals and it has a rack and mudguards. It can be jollied along, but it always feels like hard work. Previous commuter was an Edinburgh bike tourer, which was written off in an unfortunate coming together with a car. I set several of my best times on it. It had a longer top-tube giving a more stretched position. It was probably slightly heavier but certainly felt faster.
I wish I'd bought another tourer for work use when I needed a replacement to be honest. The CX has just never endeared itself to me.
