Not the prettiest of maps, but one which shows the 'new' counties of Yorkshire overlaid with the old, proper 'Ridings'...

I hadn't realised that north Yorkshire nibbled Co Durham's bottom and ate almost the whole of Cleveland. Nor that the East Riding stretched that much south of the Humber. It make you wonder how ungodly that bit must have been to have ceded it to Leicestershire.

Another map of Yorkshire for the curious, showing the sub regions. I don't know why 2 bits of Lincolnshire are on there unless its to show what was Humberside.

Pre 2001?

IIRC the Yorkshire pudding was what it was renamed. It was originally called a dripping pudding that was common across Northern England prior to the first reference to Yorkshire pudding in a 1737 cook book. It is believed the Yorkshire was put into its name due to Yorkshire coal which allowed hotter oven temperatures and a crispier pudding.

Just thought I'd let you know that it's just the name that's got Yorkshire in it not the sole origins of the pudding.

I bet if you look into a lot of regional icons you'd find they've got more widespread origins than commonly understood.
