A&E is to make sure that you don't do further damage & be secondary triage. It may be judged that it's better to wait until the require experts are there to make a better judgement rather than a general doctor doing the required re-constructive work.

When I ended up with a large hole in my arm they basically did enough to stabilise & clean the injury then sent me to a ward. I was in ward until for 18 hours, if I hadn't have needed as much medical attention to keep the wound sterile I would have been sent home. The staff in A&E could have just sown the injury up however this would have had a high probability of losing a lot of function in my arm. The surgeons reconstructed an awful lot more than just the skin on the top.

Why was not it stitched up while you were in A&E ?
(I thought this was the entire raison d'etre of A&E or am I missing something obvious).
It needed a specialist hand surgeon apparently. Just heard from the wounded adventurer, he's been in theatre to four hours, there has been some nifty revascularisation and I can pick him up in an hour. Hurrah!
