Epiphone version of a Gibson J 200 acoustic.
Epiphone Thunderbird bass.
Fender Jazz bass
A couple of nylon strung classicals.
Cheap laptop steel thing.

Good luck...would love to know best way to play really well.. i suppose an hour or so a week won't cut it?

Most of the good guitar players I've spoken with have practised for 8+ hours a day for many months/years at some point in their life. This amount of practice added to natural ability (genetics) is what makes some players very good IMHO. Classical players at a good music college practice intensely for 4-5 hours a day, every day, some students even more.

But, being able to play a few tunes on the guitar using basic open string chords could be achieved with very little practice.

I'm finding the hardest part to be getting the fingers of my left hand to do what I want them to. Practice, practice, practice till muscle memory takes over, I suppose?

That's about it yep......practice and lots of it, it'll soon fall into place.
One of the first songs i learnt when i was 15/16 and mastered some chords was 'House Of The Rising Sun' Just strumming the plec down and up with each chord is basically it, you'll soon suss it.
Edit; Found the chords etc to it here http://www.e-chords.com/chords/the-animals/the-house-of-the-rising-sun

I have a Yamaha F310 I bought 2nd had a couple of years back, can struggle through a few songs, use Andyguitar and JustinGuitar online for lessons.

Keith Richards tunes to an open G and plays very few chord shapes, it didn't exactly hinder his career as a guitarist. Joni Mitchell used very few chord shapes but several ways of tuning which makes things a bit complicated. It's not all about widdling, I've nothing against acquiring technical ability (I have a few chops), but it's that rare thing creativity and imagination that really count.
