Who needs them? Between walking the dog and cycling, I think I am fitter now than I was 8 years ago when I restarted cycling, and , apart from the initial cost of buying the bike (s) , it cost me nothing to go out whenever I want, wherever I want. Win, win situation. No obligation to go, no monthly fees to pay. Who needs a gym then?

Plenty of people who don’t have a dog or ride a bike...and who want to exercise/rehabilitate in a way that doesn’t involve riding a bike or walking (a dog)

As what Vickster says.
There are a huge amount of gyms in London now. The one opposite my work seems to be busy all the time.
Mornings and lunchtimes seem peak. I can sit here and watch them on the running machines.
Some people just don't have the time to go cycling or just don't cycle. Each to their own and all that.

If I use the council run one i'm a member of every day it works out at about 90p per visit. I reckon I miss about 6 or 7 days a month, so I get pretty good value for my £27.50 a month. There's also the mingling with others/socialising benefit I didn't get when riding my bike alone. There's a neighbour who told me that he stopped going to this gym as he was just 'staring at four walls'. He says he doesn't need a gym as he walks his dog around the park and plays bowls twice a week. That's hardly Iron Man stuff, but whatever floats one's boat eh!

£18 a month, go five lunch hours (well hour and half) a week. I'm able to fit in really focused wattbike interval sessions and strength sessions, which I wouldn't get a chance to do otherwise , leaving weekends free to go out on quality rides.

I definitely need them.

Have you got a 'Passport to Leisure' card? Our council charges £26.95/month normally but only £22.40 with a PtL card. (I assume that your council does PtL?)

'Up & Active ' it's called. I haven't heard anything about reductions.

There's a gym near where I live which is less than 1.5 miles from the furthest house in our town*. It's really popular but it always amazes me that the car park behind it is always full of cars... I know people lead busy lives but the irony's clearly lost on them.

* 20 minutes walk/ 10 minutes run/ 5 minutes cycle... perfect as part of their inclusive warm-up/cool down fitness regime?
