.There's a scrap yard near me run by Irish travelers gypsies or whatever they call themselves. The father is doing 5 years for GBH and threats to kill etc. The road nearby is out of bounds for pedestrians, cyclists, dog walkers etc as there are two fearsome dogs usually roaming free on that road. His sons and their friends often visit my local pub, snorting cocaine in the toilets and squaring up to folk because "they've been disrespected". The younger ones ride ride illegal mini motorbikes on the shared path nearby. Oh and they drive around in vans looking over peoples walls for "scrap metal" meaning anything that isn't tied down. Apart from that they're fine!

[QUOTE 3655394, member: 9609"]If the council catches you dumping Asbestos in hte tip, they may demand a specialist clean up job at a cost of a few hundred thousand pounds - they go to town with H&S at the mere mention of that stuff. The asbestos sheet has been wrapped in the council-approved plastic sheet for almost a year and just needs taking down the dump that has the appropriate skip. You don't seriously think I would attempt to dump it? The paranoia surrounding asbestos cement sheet is unnecessary and stupid but we just have to live with it. I certainly wouldn't stitch up my neighbour over it; good neighbourly relations are crucial for a relaxed and happy home life.

I think they get a raw deal wherever they go and I think people need to change their attitudes towards the travelling community. I don't deny they might flout laws, setup without consideration, and leave a mess. But please, let's be nice to them for a change.

My post went down like a lead balloon then. I knew I'd be on my own on this one.

No, you're not on your own. A travellers' site in Bristol is located next to the sewage works and council tip, and people wonder why they might prefer to go somewhere else.

and watch them ignore it , just like newham hackney and waltham forest did when a load got dumped where the 3 boroughs intersect and they ALL claimed it was somebody elses responsibility. 2 even suggested that it might be the city of londons responsibility as it was on the edge of the marshes.

even the GLA didn't want to know.

so i told them that i would send the pictures to all the local rags with my side of the story. not sure who cleared it up but it was gone sharpish

I go for live and let live but the last time our nearby closed road Sustrans cycle way had the gate locks forcibly removed to enable vehicle access and 3 weeks of residence, it was impossible afterwards to navigate for the blockade of rubbish, rubble, guttering, discarded building materials etc, not only blockading the route completely but strewn indiscriminately across the nearby grassland and landscaped ex local tip. My local councillor confirmed the media reports that the clean up cost the council very close to £100,000 and included an awful lot of human waste.

The most worrying thing for me personally with my 3 greyhounds was the repeated requests and threats every time we walked them near the house or past the site when the vans first arrived to sell / give away / hand them over or we'll f**k you up / I've seen where you live and when you're out, I'll be round later for them - to me and my wife and children. Whatever route we took to avoid them we got bothered, We were forced not to walk them locally at all and double the security on the house & make sure someone was obviously in all the time with threats within yards of the front door to be burgled.
Daft thing is one was a near cripple and another is more scared of rabbits than they are of him - they'd have been utterly useless for what they wanted and god knows what they would have suffered if they'd been stolen.

There have been a few other times over the years when travellers have set up in the same place for a few weeks without much trouble or the excessive and seemingly malicious rubbish dumping, nor the requests and threats to me and mine to give up my pets but the last lot seem to have been a different mindset altogether and a thoroughly unpleasant crew of 15 odd caravans.

When I lived in one particular town in the 70s the gypsies moved in. The locals, good, honest, pitchfork wielding ruddy faced types, asked them if they wouldn't mind awfully moving elsewhere. The gypsies declined, and that night several of the caravans were firebombed. To this day they've never been back to that town.

I was only 10 or so at the time, but it struck me even then that the only language that particular group understood was they one they were so keen to use towards other people.

Criminality, violence and intimidation are at the core of their lifestyle. Zero tolerance is the only approach.
Yes, and they jump red lights while riding down pedestrians on the pavement, plus they don't pay road tax. While dressed up as power rangers

I lived in a hamlet near to Birmingham airport when I was 7 or 8. A large permanent site was built about half a mile away. The only other two lads of my age in the village went to a different school to me, but spoke of how great the traveller kids were who had started coming to their school. In all the time we lived in that house we never had a moment's trouble from the site. Years later, when I was a student, I had a holiday job as a bar an in the nearest pub. The travelers were utterly respectful, more so than many of the other customers, and if they had a bit of a do at the pub they would make sure all the bar staff got at least a tenner each as a thank you. (That was when a tenner would buy about twenty pints)

Sorry to burst any bubbles.....

Is it only oK to make racist slurs and wild generalisations towards travellers/ gypsies or would it be alright if I did the same about Muslims? They're all terrorists don't you know.

There are ongoing issues up here with some.
Set up various camps around the city and the beach.
I cycled past one of the smaller encampments of 3 caravans and the rubbish and junk left behind by them was unbelievable.
Chewed up the cricket and football pitches in town also.
The people who left a mound of rubbish, human waste and a dead puppy deserve no respect, whoever they are.

some of my best earnings came from a travellers wedding , and travellers funerals.

only one place would take them as they were notorious for trouble- something i never saw , and was unlikely due to the owner of the restaurant . but massive massive tips at the end of the evening. and free beer all evening too.

that said at the opposite end of the scale was the scumbag from the camp in Wrexham who relieved my grandad of his savings from under the floor . the neighbours described the skanky ginger barsteward and the local plod knew who it was . sadly by the time they acted the money had long gone.

but i think he was just a bad apple.
