Went to my local branch to pick up some bits. They are big on cycling as their impressive outdoor store display shows.

I come to pay and they said their card system was down so they had reverted to those old-style paper slips with an imprint machine. Once they figured out how to fill the slip in, they asked me to sign: all good. Then they checked the signature on the card. Unfortunately it has worn off making the security check impossible. But I need not have worried as Halfords staff are highly resourceful.

"No problem" the lady said. Just sign your card again while you are here. She handed me her pen and I signed my card. She then checked and confirmed that the signature on the card matched the one that I had done in the slip, 30 seconds ago. All was well: sort of.

At the Halfords nearest me, it's often impossible to pay in the 'Bike Hut' section as the card machines frequently aren't working, so you get walked downstairs to the main tills by the entrance.

Your story beats that any day though! :okay:

PS - impressed by the 25(?) year old VW Polo in your pic

Recently I was at a bike chain store and after a couple of test rides, paying for the bike took ages. Well actually, paying for the bike was sort of quick but entering my personal details took a long time due to a new computer system.
