It's harmless if you don't want to take part, ignore the crap in the supermarket, draw the curtains, not many kids (if any) will bother you. As the parent of a 10 year old I've walked the streets with the kids for 6 years now, you go to the houses that are decorated, and you don't bother the plain ones.
Let the kids have their fun, they enjoy it a lot and there's enough for them to worry about these days to begrudge them a night of fantasy. All the dressing up, being out with their mates, free sweets from kind people, lovely.

If they made some attempt at a costume then I might agree with you. Many of those that came round last year, and recent years aren't interested in sweets, and make no effort. Some of the older one's, 15+ are only after money. They don't get what they want, there's a good chance of half a dozen eggs hitting your house.

@Cerdic, by chance do you refer to "the only man ever to enter Parliament with honest intentions"?

Of course, no problem with that as a father myself, but these past few years we've had maybe one kid around and about 7 or 8 older teenagers after fag money.

I suppose it gives shops that've found it tough during Covid a chance to make some money selling plastic pumpkins, ghost window sticker, masks, witches hats etc. As a grumpy old man it's not really my thing, but i don't begrudge children who behave when taking part a bit of innocent fun.

Its for kids really like Xmas. Personally I find Xmas worse, months of build up for a Sunday dinner.
Not sure if it is age but you are right. To me the saving grace is the shopkeepers and the malls helping with the mood with their decorations and music. Also nice to see the younger ones shopping packed with parcels for their loved ones. Lots of enthusiasm from them.

Am afraid I see it these days, since the mass commercialism of it (started when?) as a ton of plastic tat. I remember being in my local sainsburys (maybe in a somewhat odd mood) and seeing some of those witches legs you are supposed to put in your lawn/yard as if a witch has just crashed there. Couldn't help saying to the young assistant - "hell you know the planet's farked when such things are made/sold" - she agreed with me. I imagine the majority of those things will go straight to landfill - with nothing sticking out.

Kids enjoy it. I’m not bothered but like to enjoy their happiness in it. Don’t really care if people get all huffy about it, don’t like it don’t do it. Nobody is forcing you.

its commercialism at its worst,
I know. We bought 2 pumpkins. The kids spent a couple of hours getting creative and carving them. We’ll be making soup out if the innards tonight. Sunday the kids will be outdoors hanging out with their friends and getting sone sweets and having a great time.

ooohhh, the commercialism……
