Ah, here we have the Cycle Chat old grumpy barstewards.
now now - folks are entitled to their opinions - I've liked a few posts by folks clearly having a good time from it.
And I still want to see a pic of the wifey witch.

As I recall from my lancs/yorks border childhood "mischief night" was a rather bigger thing.
I was a nice boy so wasn't involved in that - wasn't let out.
My dad was often a bit grumpy I think to find his gate taken off its hinges every year.

Can't help wondering if the start of all this was the original rather good John Carpenter Halloween flick.

If only he'd known

unlikely given the film came out in 1978 and celebrating Halloween including trick or treating has been around in the US for far longer

yes I know about the american thing - I meant starting the big fashion here - a slow burn - it existed here of course before but seems to have taken off in a big plasticky product way in the last 20 to 25 years. And of course that film had several sequels - not that I ever saw them - liked the original too much.

Is it just me?

I find all this hype about Haloween too much, its commercialism at its worst, what a load of bollocks.
I find myself in total agreement with Brother Venod.

It was bad enough when it was a cheesy American import that popped uo for a few hours once a year, but now its a 3 week long festival of bol****s its utterly intolerable.

Even the sanctity of Coronation street has been ruined, where haloween dragged on for a weeks worth of episodes.

Its awful, cringeworthy rubbish. Even the French wouldn't stoop so low.

We had our first set of Trick or Treaters come tonight...
I always thought that the practice of trying to get something through force, threats or blackmail was defined as extortion, not really a great example to be passing onto our children.

"Bald assh*le" remains one of my highlights of the whole history of that show, right up there with everything ever spoken by Leon, Wanda and Suzie, and that's a high bar.

Is it not teaching your children to beg or ask for something for nothing?
If anything it teaches them to be giving too, the gang I take around the houses are only out for an hour, the rest of the time their job is to answer the door and hand out sweets to others. They love the giving side just as much, maybe more.

Begging is usually out of necessity rather than choice while trick or treat is demanding something with menaces which is something entirely different - it’s immoral and in the strict sense of the meaning illegal.

I’ve never felt especially menaced by a 5 year old smiling pumpkin or witch at the door
You maybe need to man up a tad
(or just don’t answer the door if you’re too scared )
