sometimes straight arm where there's no room for anything other than immediate compliance,, more often a small signal is there just to backup position and I think the following car is being good

I signal.....not with a half-ar$ed gesture, but VERY STRAIGHT arm, held out with CONVICTION......that, and a look over my shoulder at the DRIVER....and primary positioning.

....remember this...you don't need speed...just assured and confident, SAFE riding...and the ability to back out of this if need must!

Very rightly said. Most importantly, the last bit implies correctly that we all should be slow enough on the roundabout that it's still easy to control the bike and signal. Faster than this is not so good!

As I indicate left to come off the roundabout, I raise the palm of my hand to traffic trying to join the roundabout as a sort of 'STOP' signal, for added effect. Turns into a thumbs-up when they stop.

Me too, the thumbs up also caters for thier ego having to wait for a cyclist.

Two hands on the handlebars will not stop a wheel from sliding, in fact holding on for grim death is the worst thing you can do, I ride motorcycles off road and the secret is to relax and let the bike do its thing to a certain degree.

I find going around no handed, using both hands to signal, makes the drivers understand more stay back and means the bike can follow a flued line

I had much the same going around HPC and down Grosvenor Place, doing a fear wobble and a good 150rpm on fixed. Taxi hooted but stayed back. When he commented on my "dangerous riding", only for me to tell him that his hoot showed me he wanted to do a dangerously close overtake, and that I did the wobble on purpose to keep him at bay. He didn't like that much, and didn't have an answer at the ready.
