For hand comfort on flat bars I recommend Ergo Bars I've got some Magnesium R2's (I think) on my Brompton and I find them exceptionally comfortable. Obviously in addition to my gloves.
I've heard moustache bars are also very good for comfort and will take bar tape. There seems to be a bit of a handlbar revolution at the moment.

They are too soft, need to be firmer and less like a sponge.

My foam grip is not that soft, i guess it depends on the make.

A lot of people just use ordinary bar tape on their butterfly bars.

I use both drop bars and an aero triathlon bar. I have used that for over fifteen years now and that suits me best. I get four different styles I can use when cycling + that my back is kept straight.

Bloody hell - all the butterfly bar boys are coming out of the wood work! I usually get stick! Is this the Beaumont effect??

I didn't know there was an alternative to butterflies.

I had butterflies before I'd heard of Beaumont, in fact, I think he saw mine and said....
