Has Bradley Wiggins's much publicised accident benefited cyclists?

I went out for a ride yesterday. I noticed that motorists were giving way to me and indicating more than usual, plus pedestrians weren't doing their usual wandering in front of the bike, instead waiting patiently at kerbside.
Has BW's accident where a household name (to many who know nothing about cycling) was knocked off his bike, made them a bit more understanding of our vulnerability i wonder?

If it leads to discussions around making cycling safer then yes. Hope the focus doesn't go away in a few days though.

The only way we can get somewhere With this is whether wiggins campaigns day and night. We won't get far because government is capped but it could be a start

But we are a long way off to proving standards. Be end of story within a week

I'm going to grow some fuzzy sideburns in the hope that every driver will think I'm Bradley......

Not in my experience.

The general feeling amongst work colleagues and ex-classmates on Facebook has been one of sympathy towards the driver, and hostility towards Wiggins. One person, who I'm almost ashamed to say is a friend(!) suggested that Wiggins should've been on the pavement.

The idea of one of the world's top road cyclists training on the pavement did cause me to chuckle.

There have been some horrible comments on tv and radio shows over the last few days. Mostly of the "they don't pay tax" rubbish and some creep even moaned about cyclists not being insured so if he "hits them he'll not get a payout"!

I popped out to local co-op this morning. Coming back I was approaching a round-a-bout and could hear a car coming up behind me. I looked behind and saw it was not too close so I pulled out into primary as it is a small r-a-b into a new estate. I was only about 2m from my stop line when the to**er overtook me leaving only about 1/2 m from the bollarded island at the entrance to r-a-b and then cut across the block paved section you should not drive on. They had obviously decided well back that they would have me on or before the r-a-b whatever. (Not this r-a-b but one similar though a little larger. The r-a-b in question is not on street-view as the estate is quite new) So, no I don't think it has affected many people. Route for anyone local to me is on my Sports Tracker.

Sometimes I feel these kinds of people deserve a brick through their windscreen.

I cycled back from Accrington yesterday at 5pm. I'd been to the football match and the main road was as usual very busy with football and shopping traffic. Now i've made this journey many times in summer and winter/daytime and night time, and i'd say every occasion i've been beeped, cut up, verballed, revved at from behind etc. Even when i'm(as usual)wearing high viz clothing, using good lights and observing the Highway Code there's always one who'll want to vent his anger and nastiness on me.
Yesterday was different! Not one sign of bad manners, ok one or two did queue in traffic as close to the kerb as possible narrowing my passing gap down to about two feet but i still managed to pass them, even giving them a slightly sarcastic friendly hand signal, without them trying any funny business further down the road. Most drivers indicated as they pulled in front of me giving me good passing space as they did so. It was as if they were all retaking their driving tests again!!
I do believe that safety works both ways, we can't expect to educate motorists about our risks if we are prepared to take risks ourselves! Meaning cycling in dark non reflective clothing, using poor excuses for lighting and ignoring the basics of the Highway Code. I think BW's incident has highlighted how much danger we face, but by us making a better effort as well we can show motorists that we want to help them avoid knocking us off our bikes, making life easier for all of us!!

Not really. Riding back from Hexham along a country road, I was hounded by a bus until he scraped past me only to immediately pull up at a bus stop, causing me to brake and stop.

I got past but this was repeated. Maybe I should have waited for the bus to start off again but I was annoyed.

Then again Im not Bradley Wiggins.

I'm surprised at the bus driver's poor behaviour, not because they are all knights of the road, but they know two things:

1. Complaints about their driving from other road users are taken seriously by management.

2. There are several outward facing cameras on the bus.

Did a 4 hour ride today and did not witness a single incident of bad driving, not even a close pass. That's definitely a first. Whether it's connected or not I'm not sure.

the bit about insurance is right, I had a young lad on a silly stunt bike , the type with stunt bars on the back hub, cut between two cars on the opposite side of the road and appeared in front of me (in car) I stopped but his trajectory took his bike into my offside front headlight.(the stunt bar on his rear wheel)
he was ok but I was £100 poorer.

not all cyclists are angels.
