No, count the links otherwise against a chain that has some wear in it your new chain will be a link or two too long.

Don't do that, keep the excess for practicing chain breaking, or keep a couple of links to use to fix a broken chain if on the road.

Basically, ignore my post 'cos I clearly haven't a clue what I'm talking about.
