I have two bikes with mechanical disks and two with hydraulic, the difference is you need more force on the levers to stop with mechanical, but if your strong enough it's no problem, hydraulic is best for modulation and control.
I bought a used Planet X bike with BB7 mechanical disk brakes this summer from @Venod's son. I wasn't totally happy with the brakes to start with so I watched a couple of YouTube videos explaining exactly how to adjust them. They work really well now.
I agree that hydraulic brakes do feel better than mechanicals in use, but stopping is the main concern and I was able to bring 100 kg of me and bike to a safe stop on damp 20% descents in Devon, so I'm not complaining!
