Thanks peeps. I'm having a sit down and going through the in's and outs. I've had a good think and I have to trust how uneasy I'm feeling. They need me but as a permanent employee I loose a big chunk of cash flow to my self employment. They need to get their 'house in order' and despite asks for help it's isn't there. The inhouse problems will continue to fall to me and as self employed I can walk away from them. Employed it will just fall at my door.

We're in different industries but as one freelancer to another this debate comes up all the time.

At the end of the day, you know the market opportunities available to you, you have an underlying sense of your own market value.

On the other hand you know how much you dislike your employer, or at least the work environment.

Are they paying enough for you to stomach the pain? From your posts I would say not.

Are they the only horse in town? If not, find another one.

Personally I would never recommend taking a permanent role where I knew I hated the environment - unless I had to.

Sometimes we have no option, but be clear in your own mind that you know the justification - you'll need it in three months time to remind yourself whatever you decide.

And good luck, it's only work after all

LF - having read this string and understand your position regardIng self employment and mortgages etc (having been self employed, employed under PAYE, worked under an umbrella company and own ltd company status during my working life) I would suggest that, based on the atmosphere, you do not contemplate taking a full time position at this place. The staff sound horrible and really petty to boot, and the management sound completely inept.
If you took the role there you would end up hating every moment spent there, and this would most likely impact on the rest of your life outside of there - detrimentally. Most people do end up taking those frustrations out on the "significant other" or their children leading to bad situations at home too.

This place does not sound worth the paycheck.

If you can find somewhere else for a perm role, or failing that find other self employed work I think you will be doing yourself a favour.

In terms of mortgages etc there are financial advisers that are set up to deal with the self employed. If you need I probably still have some advisor's numbers although they would be London based which may not be especially helpful given your locale.

Not a great nights sleep mulling it over. I can't negate that it is a well paid full time contract and I know how much that would mean to others. I know there are other jobs out they're just not as well paid and money is a big factor. My intention is to sit down with the area Manager today with a list of what I need and see what he says. It's not a good place to be. The people won't change and anywhere I go you get that up to a point. I need permanent strategies in place and better coping mechanisms. I need to get a breather on a lunch time and go off site. I need to get rid of the crap they leave on my desk and give it back to them or shred it.

I don't like feeling like this. I'm too old to feel bullied.

@luckyfox do what is right for you, your alarm bells are ringing and if your talk to the area manager does not stop these bells from ringing, I would seriously consider not taking the position. Some things in life are not worth it.

Good luck

Well as expected, no turn up for the meeting.. I've put together a draft email outlining basics but i've read it back a few times so it's now a blur.

Yes, totally agree the alarm bells are ringing!! I havent gone into all the details here but it wasn't just that silliness yesterday. It's just a prime example. I spent an hour ringing round sorting out someone elses mistake yesterday because it had ended up falling into my remit... while they were shrieking about that toilet issue. It's a common theme that if you don't know what to do, leave it and eventually it lands at my door. I came here when the business assets were bought out and the same reasons it went under are here. My reasons for staying are purely financially selfish for my family but also because when i have the right tools and support to do my job, im damned good at it!

The support here is much appreciate you guys xx:notworthy::girl:

Having been in a similar situation myself, I still kick myself years later for putting up with all that nonsense and practically danced out of the place.

If you can scrape by financially without it, i'd recommend you get out ASAP and go where you're appreciated.

Good luck!

If you are not getting any joy with the area manager, have you considered contacting the owner of the business or letting the area manager know that if you don't get a satisfactory response to your requests by a stated deadline that you will be taking your concerns including lack of his/her support to the owner?

Having been in a similar situation, are you able to make a case with the area manager for restructuring the team? You as FC, a Financial Accountant and then AP/AR or something similar?

If you are getting other peoples crap, then they are not confident in the job and something needs to change.

Giving them a fright might shake things up and 'force' some respect.

The most important rule to remember is, if it isn't your work do not do it. Bounce it back, even if you have to do it several times. If the work doesn't get done then let them face the consequences the hard way.

Brief and i mean brief chat with the AM this morning. His concerns are not with me and they are looking into getting a site manager 'eventually'. The converse we also had included the words 'let me know of any problems and we will sort them out' I've heard it enough times to know i've been spun a line.

I can't be forced to sign a contract so I need to sit down and work out a long term contract for self employment. While doing this i can look for other contracts to take on or more suitable full time roles.

I have to draft an email to the owner and advise that I have tried to work things out amicably and it hasn't worked. The atmosphere here will not change until there is a major shift so I have to look after myself. Take the money, shun the extra work and hold my stance.

Sounds like you have made a sensible decision to maintain your own sanity.
