I'm not convinced that you need a hat to suit you.
Proper felt hats are seen as such an anachronism in the UK these days that any hat is going to appear 'odd' to most folk. I think that is where people see themselves as "looking a bit of a prat". Strange though, that you can wear an American baseball cap or some kind of bizarre, Andean, woolly creation and no one bats an eyelid.
Wear your hat with pride, yes people will look, some may comment (and in my experience it is always positive) but at least your head is cool/warm/dry.

I'd be careful about wearing your Fedora in the States though, it has some fairly serious culture stereotypes attached to it at the moment.

That kind of thing could equally apply to middle aged men wearing figure hugging lycra or more mature ladies wearing clothes that are 'age innapropriate'.
To be honest, I stopped caring what people thought about me when I left school! I'm not likely to worry about what some teenager types on the internet!
