I once clicked on an equine advice link in Google and got taken to a porn site that tried to download something to my PC .

fortunately Zone Alarm cut it off:thumbsup:

I would not be surprised if the visit has already taken place.....

Years ago a colleague was dragged up to see the director after his PC was logged as accessing the website of an old "Jazz" magazine - Fiesta.

It was only after he produced his car logbook that they believed his explanation that he was checking out how to fix his old car - a Ford Fiesta.

nope, used to get some options back from searches that were clearly dodgy but you don't need to follow the link to know that. Don't really see that now, seems the search engines are a bit more disciplined. But then I only use google or yahoo so can't comment on others. Still get some crud stuff by spam e-mail but all goes to trash folder and there's not as much as there used to be. Pop ups were a pain but again don't get them really now.

accidentally ending up on a really dodgy site? have to be supremely naive or incredibly pissed.

I used to hire cars in Germany from sixti.de. I was at work (at the time, I worked for a large corporate with web-monitoring) and typed it as sixte.de instead. This is now an innocent weather site, but at the time ... was not!

No, you have to be determined to access them. Believe me, there is nothing 'accidental' about it!

if you mean actually accessing content, then yes I agree, if you mean ending up at an entry page, or similar, then backing the hell away, then I think it's feasible accidentally.

Once was ploughing through a video hosting site that had some very funny clips, clicked through to the next section down and was shocked to see that it was basically deaths caught on film. Beheadings, executions and accidents don't know if the clips were actually "there" as I didn't try to watch any, but that's the 1st time I've stumbled across something really nasty.

Occasionally like the "bears" post you find a phrase or word that is shared with a fetish, but never come across any child based stuff.

IMHO you tend to have to be looking for it to find it.

You mean sites frequented by wierdos with bizarre fetishes who dress in funny clothing then hand out all kinds of abuse to each other?

You're on one now.

Never stumbled on any really bad sites (thankfully), but you reminded me of 10 years ago when we used to get lots of spam emails (due to having an email address on a genealogy website) with dodgy photos in them. That's when we got a mail filter program after downloading my mail and the first one which automatically opened had a photo I didn't want to explain to my young daughter playing near by. Thinking about it ... I don't know if mail has changed or just that they filter out the junk more but I'm definitely less plagued by that sort of spam mail now-a-days.

It hasn't happened to me (nothing really shocking), but there used to be a fair chance of finding porn by mistake about 8 years back or so. I think google now searches 'moderate safesearch' or something like that by default, so perhaps that helps.

I have always been very careful when typing in a website to get exchange rates; http://www.x-rates.com/ - s and d are only one keystroke away and I don't want to KNOW what's on the other one...

Google images will throw up some 'odd' stuff if you don't have the "safe" filter on; but nothing worse than you would get in a top-shelf magazine.
