Not really dodgy but still an awkward moment.....

When I first helped my parents get online I explained about search engines to my dad and told him he should be able to lookup just about anything he was interested in.

OK... so first thing he comes up with is to look up his football team...... Queen of the South. Yes, there are lots of websites for gay texans.

No, you have to be determined to access them. Believe me, there is nothing 'accidental' about it!

Totally agree. I remember when I first started using the web a work mate telling me that stumbling across porn sites etc was inevitable. In nearly two decades of using the net I've never once 'accidentally' seen anything nasty.

You need to deliberately set your browser so that it will bring up these sites. If you don't do that you'll never see one.

I once searched for a Government procurement scheme known as S-CAT and got some very surprising results.

I don't mean a bit of hardcore here, we are talking child related, extreme violence, beheading etc:sad:

Anyone ever have it happen?

Not a chance unless you were specifically looking for something. You wouldn't get Nick Berg's be-heading video by searching for Patsy Cline downloads.

POTD!

You get some odd results on the search page for some construction products. Neoprene being the obvious example.

I work for a major search engine. You wouldnt believe the stuff i've seen. Its interesting to see how different countries search habits vary. Us brits are more obsessed with personal finance than porn, however some other countries.......

We deal with a company called Trannies (of Scotland). A googling always makes up for a boring day in the office. ;)

I get lots of sex sites submitted to my web directory, and often get plagued with pop-ups when closing the browser after reviewing them.

Whilst there are lots of different adult sex themes and tastes out there - some very extreme ones indeed - I've never seen anything like, well, you-know-what in the 10 years I've been running Qango.

Having been involved in the internet since its very early infancy, I'm of the camp that says you can't really stumble across that kind of stuff accidentally.

I can't say I've ever heard of anyone saying they've had that happen either.

Could be true, he may have been an innocent victim of a fake link or something, but I think it's unlikely.

Cheers,
Shaun ;)

Slightly more seriously

10 or so years ago I nearly always got soft porn sites mixed with search results with names designed to disguise them and confuse search engines. (Altavista and Yahoo then)

It's got progressively better over the years with internet security programs and the search engines themselves cutting them out.

I've never had anything really nasty though, and been using the internet since before the web existed, just soft boring porn. (I've always thought sex was like cycling, far better as a participation event than as a spectator sport)

I share the view above that those who view the real nasties probably went looking for them.

I once wanted the enquiries website 192.com and hit enter after 19.com - it was a vanilla porn site. I closed it and told our network administrator immediately.

Oh and once a porn site had the name "tourdefrance.com", so I got on that and it reset my browser's home page, but we reset it back.

Nothing nasty though. I reckon you have to go looking for it.

No, tell a lie - I googled an old girlfriend, got what I thought was a social networking site, and then got loads of pop-ups, apparently some of them quite nasty, our sysadmin said. I don't know cos I was trying to close them as soon as they came up, as he could see from the record. I eventually pulled the plug out of the computer to close it down.
