Irony is a typically British source of humour and apparently many other nations, notably Americans, dont understand irony.

They don't understand aluminiumy either, pronouncing it aluminum.

I love the story about the American tourist who, on witnessing the poll tax riots in London, asked a Police officer what was going on.

"The British public are rioting, sir" replied the PC with complete aplomb.

...or the rich man whose Rolls-Royce broke down. When he telephoned Rolls-Royce he was informed: "Sir, your car has not broken down. It has merely failed to proceed."

Having worked with US folk for several decades I can say that they certainly 'get' irony but it's not a style of humour that really appeals to as many on that side of the pond. Like slapstick for some or the surreal for others (both of which they get).
