Going back years, the dead man's handle on some trains needed to have constant pressure applied to it.

Some drivers took to hanging the heavy bakelite handset of the telephone on the handle which kept it in the on position.

Some similar tactics are still used, apparently. Although the system is designed so that if the driver doesn't have to do anything for a set period of time, they have to take their foot off the vigilance device and replace it, to confirm they are still alert.
Some countries use a system where the driver has to balance the foot pedal between two positions to stop this sort of thing.
