Is pushing my heart rate a good or bad thing?
199 bpm is my highest I've ever been

General rule of thumb for Max HR is 220-age. So in my case it’s 220-29=191. It depends on your age I guess. For someone in their late teens early 20s you can probably get to that max but feel like death. My highest I’ve got since I got my HR monitor was 188 and I felt like I was going to explode. Then again all people are different so YMMV.

I may ask what find of time period are you averaging 170? I’d struggle with that for more than 5 minute intervals tbh.

That route was a 30 mile ride.
I'd heard that 220 - age...
I'm nearly 38 yrs old

It’s so variable. The above rule works almost exactly for me and I bottom out at about 180bpm at 44 years old.

That said, I have a mate who is into trail running, is older than me and his maximum HR is considerably higher than me and the rule above doesn’t work with him. I don’t think even a doctor will give you a definitive answer.

A Dr might be able to advise on the safety of maxing out a less than healthy heart (if the OP has a cardiac issue)

I got chatting to a rider in Spain once and after climbing a mountain and a few more severe shorter climbs with him he happened to mention that he was a heart specialist. I asked him about the safety of maxing out heart rate. He said that it would make sense to have a proper check up BEFORE taking up any energetic sport, but told me not to worry - it was unlikely that I had a significant heart problem or what we had just done would probably have killed me!

(He did mention that undiagnosed heart problems in otherwise healthy people do occasionally kill them, but some of them are very hard to spot before the event.)

The OP asked if it’s a bad thing...I assume that he already has concerns about his cardiac health.

Don’t know how a cycling forum could actually tell him whether it’s bad or not for him. It’s not like he’s new to cycling?

I don't think I have any health problems with my heart at all and I felt fine at the time. Done it several times previously.
Just wanted to check if there was any reason that I shouldn't push harder for longer.

Not sure why there would be if it’s not going to donyou harm/kill you?

Are you training for something specific?

Not training for anything other than the joy of cycling.
Just wasn't sure if prolonged efforts would so me any harm.
I'll just keep getting out there then

Given that you have no reason to and don't think you have any heart related problems, there is no reason why you shouldn't push harder for longer. But 199 will be close to your max and in my experience you can push harder for longer but that won't show up as a 200 heart rate for more than half a minute. Does that mean you're pushing harder? Don't know. Pushing your body hard (provided no medical issues) is all good. What's the worst that could happen? [Answer: body will invite you to ease off a bit and your brain can then have a fight with your legs/CV system about who's boss.

220-age as a useful estimate for HRmax is widely discredited btw (even its originator disavowed it for use in fit people). See my post and the thread generally.
