Correct. When i had a new boiler I told the engineer I wanted a smaller jet fitted so the boiler cycled less and he was most surprised.

`The best thing to so , but I never get asked' was his comment.

My boilers knackered and the thermostat is defunct so I control it with hard dials ATM.

I put it on a level according to the weather and if my daughter is visiting.

Mine is OK, but hot water output to taps isn't great.

I use a Hive and have smart thermostats on all radiators bar the lounge and my bedroom (because the valve is in an incredibly hard to reach place due to the fitted wardrobes that came with the property).

My main problem is that this is a crappy new build and some of the insulation leaves a lot to be desired. I really need a new front door, but can't afford it at the moment.

That's reminded me that the seal around the back door needs replacing. I have a thermal camera that plugs directly into my phone charging port and shows where the colder areas / poorly insulated areas are. The back door seemed to be fine but the camera picked up that the door seal wasn't functioning properly. It's a ( relatively ) straightforward diy job with the new rubber seal available from Screwfix and a few helpful YouTube tutorials available.

Same here. Screwfix looks expensive though - I'm getting mine from B&Q

You have to be careful with insulation, especially on older houses. This one has a lot of centuries-old timber framing and you do not mess with that unless you're 100% sure it won't trap condensation. Luckily, it retains heat quite well considering it's a suboptimal floorplan with three wings, bedrooms in the roof, and lots of 4" walls.

They're both part of the same group, quite often the same item is cheaper in Screwfix.

I found with the insulation that Screwfix only does a big £20 reel whereas B&Q has 1m, 3m, 5m, 6m, 10m etc. So as I need two lots of 5m, one white and one black that costs me £15 at B&Q or £40 at Screwfix. Screwfix is better value if I needed a huge amount. I don't.

Our local B+Q lists smaller quantities but it's not available in store, only online. " Not available in store " is at the bottom of many listings as the B+Q website nowadays. I now use B+Q " Tradepoint " website which shows what's actually on the shelf without all the third party market clutter.

We had a bad experience with B&Q 'not available in store, order online' with a bathroom unit and china basin...... 2 deliveries of broken basin, and they wanted me to dispose of them! I took them out to the delivery van. put them in and took a photo. You'll probably be ok with insulation though - they won't break it

Fair point. They also sell some right old toot on there. I bought a chain pruner for £23. It lasted about as long as you would think it might at that price.

I can recall staying with my Grandad in Kent for the suymmer, around 1972 or 1973, and he removed a gas fire from the living room. He closed off the pipe by tapping a piece of cork into it, then plastered over it. It's probably still there! Even at the tender age of 5 or so I realised that perhaps that wasn't the most diligent method of doing things.

Brilliant! That made me laugh. Reminded me of a Scottish builder I worked for in the summer holidays when I was a student. He almost killed us joining two very live large cables together one morning and had many ‘solutions’ to problems just like your Grandad. Happy times!

So was it sold by B&Q or just a "marketplace" seller using their website? Them, the Range, Tesco and more all have delusions of their websites becoming competitors to ebay, rather than useful store info and sales.

As the money was paid (by credit card) to B&Q, my stance is that the contract was with B&Q with the goods being delivered direct from supplier by a carrier. B&Q got quite 'difficult' about it and said we had to deal directly with the supplier for a refund. Fortunately the supplier 'issued the refund' via B&Q, by telling them we the customer had 'changed their mind' ! After waiting a couple of weeks for delivery, (broken, which they refused to uplift), and then getting another broken, I was understandably not too impressed as I needed to finish the bathroom for my Daughter - 'changed their mind indeed' ... all we wanted was a good one, and weren't prepared to wait for another attempt. If push had come to shove I'd have been getting the credit card Co involved. We went to Homebase the next day and bought off them (though it didn't prevent their demise  )

I had something similar with The Range. Id bought from a 3rd party vendor via their website, but the money went to The Range so thats whomI went after, and they refunded me eventually.
