Hi there,
My name is Josh and I want to get into cycling. I have an oldish mountain bike so I'll be using that to get into it. I went out for a 12 mile cycle yesterday and I didn't feel too bad after it (although my buttocks won't agree with that). From your experiences, does it take long to get into longer rides? 30/40/50 miles? There are a couple of decent looking routes around me (westhill area) that I'd like to try out soon.

:welcome: :bicycle:

Little bit often, get out when you can. Extend your weekly milage by about 10% per week and before you know it you will be knocking out 30/40/50 milers.

We should warn you its highly addictive this cycling malarkey.

Hi Josh
welcome to cycle chat..just take your time and increase your distance a wee bit everytime you go out and you'll soon be doing 30 to 50 mile runs. The Inverurie bike ride is a good one to aim for.Its usually in July and is 25miles with a good mix of hills and descents. Aberdeenshire council organise it. Check their website for info. We always do it on our Tandem and its great fun with good organisation..Maybe see you there..We are the couple on the Bob Jackson Tandem

Hi Josh. Or indeed....fit like? And welcome.

There are some really nice rides out beyond Westhill - it's ideal cycling country with some great side roads which you probably didn't know existed, short cuts round the back of Skene Loch and the like. Try the back road to Banchory running parallel to the Torphins Road, or out to Monymusk. Plan them out on something like this...bikemap.net which gives you distances and even route profiles if you want to avoid hilly bits. Having said that - it can be hard going on the road on an old mountain bike. Typically you move about 1/3 slower than a road bike. So you could swap your tyres for narrow slicks or better still....buy a new bike. You'll want to eventually.

Hi Josh and welcome

I'm in the 'Shire too but further south. I started in Jan on my old MTB and after about 6 weeks bought a roadie and in 2 weeks will be doing my first 100km run

Thanks for the nice welcome!

Alan - I'll definitely have a look into the Inverurie bike ride. It sounds like a good goal to work towards and something to focus on.

aberal - Those are exactly the kind of roads I want to be doing.

I'm away to start a new job so I'll be looking at buying a new bike when the first pay cheque comes in  I'll probably go for a road bike. Does anybody if the Edinburgh bike shop is any good at advice etc for buying a bike?

Ok magic, I'll have a look there once I've saved up some cash.
17th of July is the day after I'm having a big graduation BBQ so I might be out of action that day  Although 25 miles on the bike might shake off the hangover ;)
Thanks for your advice!

Hello Josh

Lucky boy, lovely area to be riding around, get up that way for work reasonably reguarly and usually take my bike.

last time i was in your area i cycled from the ythan hotel to Cruden Bay and back. Lovely! although it got cold pretty quickly once the sun had dipped.

next time i am up that way i will drop you a pm to see if you fancy a ride out.

good luck with the riding and make sure you get lights and a helmet as well as a sparkly new bike
