just in case you were concerned, you don't need to have a road bike to join the CTC - (they welcome cyclists of every persuasion) nor indeed to join in with the rides. In fact some Sundays I've secretly wept as my sparkling clean road bike is cycled through muddy lanes strewn with rubble and peppered with potholes! How I sometimes wish I was on a hybrid like some of my fellow riders.

I'm pretty sure you can 'try before you buy' (ie: make contact, come along to a ride, join in and if you like you can then join).
