Hi all, I've been lurking for a few weeks while I fettle cluelessly about in the garage.. hopefully I wont ask too may noob questons that can't be found using search

After 15 years getting fat and then this year losing 4 stone I was given an old Magma MTB by a neighbour... which was great for getting me back into cycling , something I last did in 98. After a month or so I was up to 12k rides twice a week and the Magma was showing it's crapness !

I found an old Dawes hybrid ( A Backstreet with a Reynolds Frame and 700c wheels) on ebay for £50 and not looked back. Now doing 10k to 15k most weekday evenings, an 18k on the weekend and quit a 30 year smoking habit (6weeks 2 days !) Maybe next season I'll get a road bike but the plan at the moment is to build up to commuting next year, which is a 14mile ride to Macclesfield and a couple of climbs.

Hopefully as my weight drops further the hills will get easier... there are some great rides I've been told about near Alderley Edge and the Peak District but at the moment they are beyond my fitness level. My BMI is currently 31, down from 39 and the aim is 25.

My next milestone is a 30k loop around the Cheshire B Roads and the new Alderley bypass cycle lane.

I'm taking the advise of others to keep the sprocket on the middle ring this season and working on getting my cadence up and maintaining it , once my lungs and heart get used to working again I'll think about the outer ring

So another middle age crisis candidate.... but I don't wear lycra (yet)

Cheers

Just noticed the 6weeks and a bit quitting smoking part of your post... Didn't see it before.

Congrats on that, dude. I'm on two months and 10 days and don't have cravings anymore.

Im training pretty much full time again, my VO2 max is climbing nicely, resting heart rate is falling nicely too. Other than buying a bike, it's the best thing I have done this year!

Diddnt know that was there..and I've been working in Hurdsfield for years... looks great for a lunch time jaunt. Cheers.
It is a fantastic trail and i often help the Rangers on the Macc end of it.When i am over at Teggs Nose i join it at Hurdsfield and ride to Poynton Coppice before hitting the road across to Manchester. If you are feeling the need to explore why not try the Mainfold way near Leek ?
