Jungle Cafe rings a bell - was that somewhere near Shap out of Kendal?
I've no idea when it closed down but I have never visited the place - maybe it was gone before I first cycled between 1991 - 1999.
I actually had a ride out towards Kendal on Wednesday - went the back route through Burton / Endmoor (A65) - turned back about 3 miles short of Kendal.

ex-Carnforth here, couple of years younger than you. Went to Ripley. Nothing but hills here in the Peak District, you've got the best of all worlds where you are.
