I have no idea what to ask for for Christmas, so my wife said she'd get me a helmet camera (£40 one, not a GoPro). I was just wondering, can you do reasonable editing on YouTube, or do you need software? Is the free software any good for basic use?

Anyone do vlogging or anything - is the editing a full time hobby or can one do a simple job in an hour or two?

I would just like to film some stuff, edit out the interesting bits and add voice overs or text (I have a Mic).

I personally use the 2012 version of this http://www.windows-movie-maker.org/
Dead easy to use. If your cam records in MOV format, run and install apples stupid iplayer for the codecs and then MOV's will work in it too.
It's basic but does the job.
Don't use the direct youtube upload button. Save your movie to the computer first then use youtube to upload. That's the way that works for me anyhoo.
Someone here might know a better way.

VLC media player (free) allows you to 'edit' by simply hitting the red record button when you play a clip, so you can sub-sample clips, which is what I did with my videos. Didn't need any other software really.
