The common is nice on a bike - we have been doing gentle rides there one evening in the week for the last few weeks. It is possible to go off road all the way to Richmond Park. Cross the A3 at the cycle/horse crossing at Robin Hood Gate. In Richmond Park there's a shack that does bike rental, by the overpriced cafe at Roehampton Gate. They have a variety of bikes includng MTB, hybrids and tandems. From there you can take the outer track to Richmond Gate on the opposite corner of the Park and it's worth having a look down by the river. Go striaght over at the mini RAB out of the main gate and turn right at the end - some good views from the top of the hill... head down to the town/bridge/river. You can walk it all the way into Wimbledon town from here - did it one summer and it was about 3 hours or so at a gentle pace, through the middle of the Park and then the common.

Going out wise, there are plenty of nice places in Wimbledon Village as eluded to above and if you fancy something less poncy, the town is just down the hill.

Ride Richmond Park mid-week if you can - the off-road route is much quieter than the road although you do need to give way to walkers and the odd deer!
Otherwise the Wandle Trail follows the river through the outskirts of Wimbledon to Wandsworth and is a mix of off-road and mostly quiet residential roads. The thames towpath is good too (e.g. Kingston to Richmond)
