As I stated above, without a will even the simplest of cases will result in a delay, more costs and usually the need to pay death duties and funeral costs before being able to access the money.

But realiy, what difference does it make. The person dealing with it gets the probate letter from the government, then that's that - you show that to the banks etc and fine. I really don't think having a will or not makes any odds - unless someone tells me different (with reasons).

A complex set up - well yes. But a straightforward widow gets the lot - I'd need convincing. To be fair it's a while since I read up on it but that's my recollection

Let's hope you don't have to find out too soon. Seriously have a little read up on it. A little bit of paperwork now saves a lot of hassle for someone later. Ultimately the money should go to the right people without a will, but at such a stressful time you are only adding hassle, roadblocks and a little bit of cost.

I'm not trying to do a late night internet argument but what do you think it different?

Complex arrangements yes sure a will is good - but all to the Mrs? I've never handled an estate but my father has a couple of times (no will) and it was all pretty easy. I made a will a while back as my situation was a bit convoluted then, but for simple cases I don't see why it helps particularly. Arguably there's the extra risk of a badly written will too
