it's one of those new superventilated helmets. Try it out. Your friends will be very, very impressed.

It's a protective face mask for use when washing up - kitchen manufacturers' lawyers now insist on them in case of litigation.

The saelf-same though had occurred to us both Swee'pea, if it hadn't been for the fact that Mrs B. wanted the bread kept off the worktop (i.e. not in a bread bin on the top but in a cupboard), we'dve binned it weeks ago but it served as a bread store. Now I've bouhgt and fitted a nice Blum internal drawer it's redundant.
I had independantly drawn the conclusion it was a masturbatory inclusion into kitchen accessrioes i.e. there for fiddle value only, but it's nice to have it confirmed.

We used to have one of those - it came with a lid to match! It is currently in the garage full of bits & pieces of stuff! I can't remember if we ever used it for anything, except for plopping the lid on to cover dirty dishes if people called round and the kitchen was a tip!

No, we genuinely didn't know what it was for. Ours is a stainless sink with a chromed wire basket.

Well, in a metal sink, its useless. I'd get a bowl and save water...sounds like a design that has been translated (read "copied") for no reason and no-one really knows why...a bit like the myriad of phone's that have flooded the market with touch screens AND keyboards, no one knows why they have touch screens ..even the designers...but if it worked for Apple, then what the hell...shove a touch screen on it so that people can press all the buttons with their ears when they try to use the phone...daft

Why do people put plastic bowls into sinks? It seems superfluous to me.

So you can shove stuff in the bowl to soak while you cook, but still pour cooking water etc down the sink...

The question is more 'why would anyone not have a washing up bowl'

BTW, the washing up bowl was invented by accident. A plastic manufacturer, just after the war, was experimenting making shapes and bowls, and one night the char lady, collecting teacups from desks decided that the plastic bowl sitting on a designer's desk was a better bet than the enamel one she normally used to carry the cups in, because there was less risk of chipping.

Mrs S has been managing a kitchen showroom and designing kitchens for the past 10 years, so I thought I’d be really useful to this thread and be able to provide a definitive answer to the original question. So I asked Mrs S and .... nah, she don’t know either:ohmy: ;)
