@Yazzoo Which bike shop are you talking to? I ask as there are a few others in Suffolk who may be able to help more quickly.

Not sure which part of suffolk you are in but options could include;
Ipswich;
Elmy's
Thomas's cycle revolution
Moons

Martlesham;
Pedal Power

Bildeston;
Life Cycle (my personal favourite and shop of choice)

Bury St Edmunds
Revels
Maglia Rosa (near Bury ish)

Equally there may be some suffolk based CC members who could help fit it you had the parts

I'm right on the east coast - Maglia Rosso is where my De Rosa came from and they were lovely - over 1hr30 away though

The shop i've taken it to is the Life Cycles in Lowestoft - not sure if they're related to your Bildeston one or a franchise - or coincidence!

Martlesham is the nearest to me on there, still nearly an hour away but I'll give them a call, thanks!

Ooh how did you find that! I'd order it if I thought I'd know what to do with it once it arrived lol - not got brilliant reviews though!
I googled the bike, checked the chainset spec, googled that, found the BB info and googled the BB. But I had an idea of what I was looking for. There are others available.

It is possible that the chain and rings (and cassette) need changing too, although this would be due to wear and tear as opposed to being related to the BB....

Just phoned Pedal Power in Martlesham and they've said it should be ok for the weekend - the creak may be off putting but won't cause any damage and will be fine for 100miles - but get it to the shop the next week and they'll try to identify and source a replacement BB and talking it through with them on the phone they agree that the chain and rings etc shouldn't need replacing - unless as you say they are worn out in their own right!

If you are going to change the chain rings , chain and cassette then you would run them until the chain started slipping , no point changing them before that, even when the chain starts slipping it is usually on 2 or 3 of the most worn cogs on the rear so not that big a deal even if it started when in the middle of a big ride .

I think I may have to take an evening class or something - I hate feeling like I'm being taken advantage of cause I don't understand!

For clarity's sake I am female, my partner is male.

Maybe I need to go and get the bike and try elsewhere - I left it with them on my way to work this morning for them to investigate so it's still there at the moment

You could always give them a call and ask for a price for just the bottom bracket replacing. They could be right, the chain rings, cassette and chain may need replacing at some point, but start with just the bottom bracket then get hubby to take it for a ride.

Sounds to me like they were suggesting a general upgrade to a current bottom bracket (Hollowtech or some such) which would then require lots more replacing (but might allow them to sell a lot of bits they have hanging around in stock.

The other point that hasn't been mentioned (or I've missed) is if your partner has trained on this bike and is used to it, then they are going to have an easier time of it doing the 100 miles on it. If the bike was a poor fit and they were griping about it anyway then it'd be less point having money being spent on it.

He's been whining about it for some time now and desperate to upgrade it - alas finances won't allow it - i'm sure he will try to twist this situation to his advantage!

The issue - as I understand such things - is that if the LBS don't have the same style BB in stock (which they probably won't) then in order to replace it with a newer one, they'd also need to replace the cranks because the attachments are different. The chainring shouldn't be effected, but sometimes it will be as the newer cranks may have mounts for 5 arms instead of 6 etc. And if you change the chainring as above you should also change the chain and maybe even the cassette. So although the BB per se shouldn't require any of the rest changing, in practise it may well do so, although the LBS probably could just order an old BB in from online, again they're unlikely to do so.

In which case it sounds like N+1 syndrome in full effect and I'd buy him some ear plugs for the weekend and just tell him to save harder :-)

Shhh, you just stopped a fellow cyclist getting a new steed! You should be advocating a remortgage of the house to buy the best that money can bike with carbon fibre hand rolled on the thighs of virgins.

If he's been whining about it, why hasn't he fixed it himself...men eh ;)

I think @jefmcg BB came a cropper around the time of one of her mammoth rides...I wouldn't risk it on a 100 miler...and if it's a sportive, he should pre-book his spot on the broom wagon just in case...sweep sweep :biggrin:
