You are right green: Without the Japanese bombing the American ships at Pearl Harbour, would the Americans have entered WWII when they did?
Not to the day, but the idea that America wouldn't have joined the war unless directly attacked is a bit silly. Roosevelt knew the US would have to enter at some point; he didn't like the idea of a Nazi dominated Europe any more than we liked the idea of being dominated, much less the noises coming out of Japan. Lend-lease were the first steps towards mobilisation, all he needed was a justification to give the isolationist American public.
Conspiracy theories get a far as it was known about the planned Japanese attack on Pearl beforehand, and that aside from shipping out the carriers it was allowed to proceed unimpeded to create just that justification.
