There's loads of them in Chester, literally fleets of them on the roads about 08:30ish near the centre of town.

And what's the alternative?

So posties are picking up the mail in their own cars, driving to the general area of delivery (which are 1-3 miles away from the main sorting office) unloading the cars into these buggies and then delivering on foot.exactly

Surly this invalidates their own car insurance.
Sort of.

When I worked for RM (I was with them for 9 years) there was an insurance extension form which you could sign. It basically covered you from the office to first point of delivery. I imagine that there were plenty of blokes who didn't bother though. I have to admit that I did it too (when I was based in Coventry) simply because waiting for the bus could eat up hours of your day. Time that could be more profitably spent at home or in the canteen...

depends if they've insured themselves for business use, in which case, its fine.

I usually see a number of postmen on bikes in Bristol so I would be sad to see them go (for some reason they always seem to be wearing shorts too - even in the winter). My local one seems to do it on foot. But I've seen one of the parents at school who drives parks up, delivers 20-30 houses, moves his car, and delivers the next lot etc. I don't see the point in moving the car street by street.

Er...
I used to do that sometimes. It meant that I could do a street with just a bundle of mail for that street, rather than having to carry a whole bag of mail. When I was based in Leamington (which was an office that still used bikes) I used to break my round up into small loops, which meant I could leave the mailbag on the bike and walk round with a bundle.

Used to see quite a lot of posties on bicycles just outside the city centre in York on bicycles, not many a lot further out. Only seen the odd one in other cities.

We don't have any locked up buggies but I have spotted a number of posties parking up.

I understand why they don't want to carry all the mail at once but to keep moving the car each time... surely he could work out some kind of loop system and park the car and not have to move it all the time. (Note he was one of those parents who always dropped his son off at the gate on the yellow zig zags too - welded to his car).

I was a postman for 2 months in 1986, and I'm happy to report that I cycled 6 miles to the PO, did the round on a bike and then cycled home
I occasionally wore a flat cap, too, but that's another story. :sun:

Scalped 3 of posties on bikes a couple of weeks ago in one move.

Mind they had just pulled out of the depot so were probably fully loaded. I'll take any scalps I can get though....
