Right, Macpeeps! Can anyone help me out? I need to use someone else's wifi (with permission) but there's some kind of firewall. I have the correct password, and my laptop can find the wifi and connect to it, but it is blocked from connecting to the internet or email. Everyone who tries to connect at this location with a non-Apple device has the same problem, so it isn't just me. I have access to the iMac, so could change the firewall settings... if I could find them. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Burn anything Apple. Should work fine then.

What's the router ?

Do you haev access to an apple device? If so, connect both and compare connection settings, IP address, Router etc. They should be the same except the IP address last number is different for each device.

GO find the router - it may have a WPS button on it - that simplifies connection - you press that, do a search on your device, then connect within the given timeframe (like a couple of minutes).

As others have been said, the router could be locked down to just specific devices only.

Chateau Levy is an Apple house but anyone having access to the password can access the network via the router irrespective of the OS of the device gaining access.

I've just had a look at the instructions for connecting my Apple to an O2 router

Here they are, there might be a clue or two in there - possibly number six.

To connect to Wi-Fi:

  1. Click on the AirPort icon on your Mac, at the top right of the screen.
  2. Choose ‘Turn AirPort on’ (if it says ‘Turn AirPort off’, it’s already on).
  3. Click on the AirPort icon again.
  4. Choose ‘Other’ (a new window will open).
  5. Where it says ‘Network name’, type in the long SSID number that’s printed on the bottom of your wireless box (or the name of the network you want to connect to).
  6. Where it says ‘Wireless Security’, choose ‘WEP 40/128-bit Hex’.
  7. Where it says ‘Encryption key’, type in the long WEP number on the bottom of the box (for some versions of Mac, you need to type a $ in at the start of the WEP key – if it won’t let you, you don’t need to).
  8. Click ‘OK’.

According to the OP's post she is already connected to WiFi.

The router has no controls on it except the sort of reset button that you need to stick something pointy in. There is also something called an Airport Extreme Base Station, FFS. That has no buttons on it either. I am posting from the iMac that is connected via the router. Thanks for above suggestions, which I will study and see if I can make sense of them. The laptop I wish to connect is an HP elitebook with Windows 7, but the problem is the same for any non-Apple device - my brother's Windows phone, my Android phone, other laptops etc...

Oh the router is a Virgin Media one. And yes, I am already connected to the wi-fi, but something is blocking programs from accessing the internet.
