Hi guys,

My son,23, has just started cycling and has a decent specialized road bike thanks to c2w.

He has done a few short rides with me, but is very unfit. He has signed up to do a section of a sponsored ride in 10 weeks. He will have to do 85 miles.

We have a local cycle track in the park and I have suggested that over the next eight weeks he rides the track three times a week, building upto a fourth ride at each weekend. So weekend one-10 miles, weekend two 20 miles and so on, with the aim of riding 80/85 mile at least three times before the event.

How does that sound, or is a slower build up better?

How quickly does he want to do the sponsored ride? Whats the terrain like and how unfit is he?

As for time, i think it's more about completing it without injury.
it is from derbyshire to the Midlands...waiting for him to find out exact route, but has been classed as a 2 on a scale of one to three!

He does no exercise, 6 foot, 16 stone, needs to get sport/exercise in his life.

IMO he will need to build his endurance 8 weeks is a decent timespan hed be better off doing a couple of rides a week as far as he can manage, for the first 3 weeks. Get his diet and Hydration sorted, Get him stretching before and after his rides. And plenty of rest sleep and recovery.

Make sure hes taking on his carbs. and protein after his ride. This should hopefully get him into the mindset to take on some serious training over the next 3 weeks, Building up to more rides over longer distances, But wouldnt do more than 4 a week. The last week of this set I d aim for himto do a 60 with 2 easier rides either side with adays rest at least in between.

It should nt be nessacary for him to do a full distance as he ll be phsyched up for it on the day. 7th week knock it back a bit, and 8th week knock it right back to keep him just ticking over.

Weekend 1, Hockley Heath. One stop shop for a drink.
Weekend 2, Henley in Arden. Ice cream shop.
Weekend 3, Once round the No. 11 route.
Weekend 4, Stratford upon Avon. Hathaway tea rooms.
Weekend 5, West Midlands Safari Park.
Weekend 6, Top of the Lickey and top of Barr Beacon.

Then,,, Ashbourne, Leek, Buxton, Bakewell, Matlock and back to Ashbourne.

Then,,, He's ready.

No need to do the whole distance before the actual ride. 0-85 miles in 10 weeks is pretty good going.
I'd vary the route too- 6 laps of the park might drive him nutty.

Oh, and I'm 6 foot one, 16.5 stone. Specialised bike from c2w scheme.
Is that you dad?

Oh, not 23 anymore.
