Make the hole bigger and turn it into a pond.

How about a 'smudge' fire using sawdust? Pack the hole solid with sawdust and all around the stump too, then slowly burn it out. Not a quick process as it needs watching so you can damp it down if it goes too fast i.e big flames. Only thing I can think of, it'll probably burn for days too.
Otherwise what gc says - watch the chain on dirt and rocks in the stump though.

Wrong time of year but stump killer is the only way other than digging it out. Burning it doesn't work as stumps are too moist to burn.

How does stump killer work, green? Does it rot the stump out?

Yeah, its just like very strong weed killer. We had a 100 year old oak that snapped in a gale 3 years ago. My dad didn't fancy digging it out even though he's got a JCB. 3 years later and there is one small piece left.

[QUOTE 2415014, member: 9609"]Any ideas for this. Eucalyptus tree, cut the tree down about three years ago didn't think would ever bother with the stump, but the wife has decided it needs to go. It's in a part of the garden that I can't get any machinery into to pull it out - so decided to dig it out. Two foot down each side and cut all the roots, it's still as solid as a rock, can't burn it out as it is a bit close to neighbours fence, (she has lots of stuff growing up other side so can't temporarily take down)

What's going to be down there if I keep digging, another tree ? getting sick of it.

Errm, leave a 4ft stump and rock it out.

Oops too late!

You'll know next time!

I wouldn't hold out too much hope for stump-rotting fluids. Eucalyptus has an almost turpentiney sap which is quite an effective preservative - you could be waiting for a lot more than another three years. I cut a slightly smaller one down to a stump several years ago and the stump is still completely intact.

You haven't in fact 'cut all the roots', because these things usually have a stonking tap root. Three solutions:-
- dig down even further until you can expose enough of the taproot to get at it with an axe or a saw. A mattock will just bounce off.
- get hold of a proper felling axe and some steel wedges and split the whole stump from the top.
- stick hand in pocket and get a contractor to come out and knacker his chainsaw blade on it.

I would go for the contractor!
