Re the lacquer, a decent cutting compound or car polish will get that up to a high gloss.

Did a bike a few years ago and rode around with it like that for years then someone pointed out what needed doing, it looked great after and was very shiny.

Nice bike!

I have exactly those shift levers, and found that by soaking the rusty sprung washers and winding nuts in those green Hammerite rust removal gel for a day or two they gain a nice, rust resistance sheen in black.

It is definitely a no no to run Shimano spd anything on such a bike... :becool:

Cheers for that, will give it a go.

Ha ha sorry, I only have 1 pair of shoes that I use for everything so Shimano SPD it must be. (I did at least get the white).

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Should really be toeclips and straps to be in period - Lyotard platforms maybe . Looks great - and would look even better if the saddle was level, and the bars rotated upwards a little (so that the bar ends are pointing at the rear axle).

Really enjoyed following this thread. A real labour of love and well worth the effort. Agree with comments about the final tweaks mentioned above.
Congrats!!

Thanks all, will do the final tweaks and get some decent photos when the weather improves. Can't wait to ride it but she's going no where near water or road salt.

Agree the saddle should be level, but the bars are about ok as they are.
Only if the levers were moved up a little, maybe. I certainly couldn't use those bars as they stand. Even in the early 60s we rode on the hoods.

Very nice indeed!

My mate at college had one just like it (in Gios blue) which his dad had given him for passing his A levels. Lovely bike, well done.

Now please level your saddle..
