To date mostly every time I've seen a cyclist on the side of the road and offered help, they have usually got it under control, so I can only really count a couple of times helping primary school kids put a chain back on or that type of thing whilst on my way home with my son (or the loan of a pump or tool kit in the school bike shed).

Recently stopped when I saw a couple of young ladies wrestling with an up-turned MTB that had thrown it's chain- the rear mech was in a right tangle - but were very grateful they could resume their journey after some deft (but very oily handed) sorting from me... All helps to build the Karma...

I carry a shrader (schrader?) attachment thing for my pump too in case I pass anyone with a shrader flat without a pump.

I wonder if people don't realise - often pumps have both fitment types. You have to unscrew the cover where the pump attaches to the tyre, remove the rubber ring and plastic doobrie (technical term ) and put them back upside down.

Stopped to help a young woman out as her chain had got caught between the cassette and the wheel. Was a bugger to get out. She seemed impressed I carry around latex gloves.

I will generally ask those cyclists who are at the side of the road looking like they are fixing something, if they need help. Seem to go past quite a few.

I have posted on here before about the Dun Run cyclist. I used to live near Sudbury and went out one night to see a few of the Dun Run riders go past. One was having problems with a damaged wheel so I lent him one to carry on with. Despite faithful promises to return it to me that was the last I saw of it.

I was on a recent charity when a young chap was on the side of the road trying to release his brakes from the wheel rim. Apparently he had lost control and ended up in a hedge causing his calipers to move out of position. Out came the multitool and he was on his way. For my good work I was visited twice by the puncture fairy in the next 20 minutes.

Well, what do you know? I just checked and mine does that. So I'm not only a failed Knight, but an incompetent one too. In my defence I inherited the pump so it didn't come with instructions. You live and learn on this site.

Not had a chance to help anyone yet, but well done to all that have. I have got breakdown cover with ETA bike insurance, not used it though but you never know. Not sure who turns up, could be a big flat bed with my bike on the back and I get drived home

A few days back I came across two cyclists who looked like they were in trouble both bikes laid on the ground, so I stopped they said “no were all right we are just looking for a bag/container to put some blackberry’s in”

I've stopped to help a few people put chains back on and things like that, but as I only do a small commute and take the train I don't always carry tools. Luckily there's only been one instance where I couldn't help, but I always ask people if they are OK if I see them at the side of the road. I hope if I'm in the same situation people will help me out.

I once helped someone out who had a p******e and no tools to fix it with. After stopping they also revealed they didn't have a spare tube or a clue what to do. After getting my hands dirty and donating one of my tubes, we both carried on our rides as we were heading in the same direction.

The fact she was blonde and easy on the eye had nothing at all to do with me stopping, honest

. In general I do offer help in the hope if it was me struggling at the side of the road, then others would do the same.
