People who think Terry Pratchett isn't funny are obviously not well enough read to get the references to classic literature that form the mainstay of the humour.

...or have read too much PG Wodehouse already.
I think part of the problem is the TV adaptation s have all been awful. Not just bad, but really, really awful.
I am blissfully unaware of the TV adaptations.

is this an heretical opinion? I was not familiar with the sketch ,but after 4 minutes I gave up, in agony. Seems very dated to me. Never spent much time with M&W, so I do not have an educated palate. Personally, I'd rather watch an episode of Man about the house

(apologies if this isn't the sketch you liked)

Yes that's the one. Watched it again, and at first thought it maybe a bit dated but the perfect timing of the wholly contrived set up had me giggling, the when, finally they get to the band and the piano, the brilliant silliness of it had me just waiting for the pay-off when Eric finally plays - and the joy of Previn's horrified expression is timeless and has me in stiches as always. I think the anticipation makes it better - maybe a bit like Stan and Ollie's work

Ok. It's a draw at this point.

I did leave the skit before it hit it's stride. I will pick it up again again in the next few days. Whether we can count a sketch that doesn't really hit its stride until solidly after 4 minutes is "timeless" is open for discussion. I'll let you know my opinion.

And I won't be comparing with any contemporary comedies after finding out that Man About The House is much worse than my memories of F&H.

I'm a tad disappointed that so much of this thread - whose title actually seems to me to have potential - has turned into an 'I don't like x' ercise.

For some slightly more positive heresy, I think politicians are much-maligned.

I don't know any personally, but I think it likely that many if not most are driven largely if not entirely by a desire to do what they can to advance the common good, as they see it. I think good constituency MPs far outnumber bad ones, and most will do their best to help constituents who need help. I think almost all start off meaning well, and a large proportion remain that way. Of course ego and money play their part, but I suspect most politicians, in this country and many others, probably work harder, and for better motives, than they are ever given credit for.
