In a 50 zone, the speed limit is 50 + 10% + 2, that's why the cops leave you alone.

The rules show this is the speed limit but the police seem to think the above formula is more appropriate, so why jkot be practical and help!the cops out.

ACPO (or CCPO now) recommend it, it's not law. That said, speed enforcement is expensive so most forces go along with it to keep the costs manageable.

It is still your responsibility, you are the one trying to make the manoeuvre.

Not sure how to take that.
Obviously my driving is my responsibility and there was no way that I was going to change lane blind.

He was sat on my tale, preventing me from doing anything other than slowing down or speeding up. And my indicater was showing him that I was trying to change lane before the road split into different directions. The only thing I could see in the mirror was the lorry.

You see signs on the back of lorries saying that if you can't see their mirrors, they can't see you.
Well it works both ways. If I can't see past a lorry in my mirror, it's too close.

I've had this too. I was using the speed limiter in my car, set to 50 according to the GPS in my phone and the car's sat-nav. Still had some inadequate in his tipper try to show me the part number of his grille panel.
Couldn't agree more, please film them and report them, send the footage to the Transport Commissioners, they are more likely to deal with it than the police.

anything under a 2 second gap is tailgating, and anything under a 1 second gap should be prosecuted.
1 second at 50mph is 22.5metres (white lines are usually at 9m centres) so it is easy to show from video what is serious tailgating.

also contact your police and ask what they are doing about this serious problem, do a 'freedom of information' request and ask how many people they have prosecuted for this offence, I did with Northumbria police for the A1 & A697 and they have never prosecuted anyone. Specific laws were brought in a few years ago to deal with this problem, but the police are not interested in enforcing it.
I reported a lorry driver to the Traffic Commissioner last year, who was on his mobile phone as he almost wiped me out twice. Traffic Commissioner didn't want to know and told me that traffic offences are a police matter!!

Okay, so lets say everyone drives exactly in accordance with the (outdated) highway code, ....

... as I already said the highway code is just that , a code of conduct written many years ago to suit the motoring needs of drivers and trafffic back in that era.
The highway code was first written and published in 1931 and very little of it has been updated since.
Ah - looks like you nay not have read the Highway Code since the say you passed your test.

I highly recommend revisiting it - you might be surprised how much has changed.

Traffic commissioner is a bit like the prime minister in the chain of command. Your best off telling the police who will probably tell you to contact VOSA (lorry coach van etc police). Get them sniffing around a company who receives a lot of complaints and transport managers get twitchy bums and clamp down on the naughty drivers. As many have said good and bad in all of us but the minority always stand out.

Vast majority of HGV driving I see is admirable, as are the vast majority of most road users.

But the impact of a juggernaut incident raises the risk significantly IMO.

Rather than argue about speed limits here, get a dash cam and start reporting them. I might do the same. It's just nuts the stuff people get up to. And I don't give a shoot about their motivations.

And don't get me started on the "legitimate" undertaking manoeuvres. When the M25 is free flowing in the evening it's like the start of a demolition derby at times.
