Hi all I am mart and i am new to cycling and I am very overweight I have brought a second hand road bike a barracuda azzurri that I have converted to a flat bar as its more comfortable for me ok so the thing is I am worried about actually riding it now as the wheels are thin and worried they my not hold my waight (700x23) is the biggest tyre I could fit in the frame and also I haven't cycled on the road since childhood and I used to love cycling all my previous bikes have been mountain bikes I live in the south west so there is loads of country side that I feel I am missing out on any advice would be really appreciated thanks in advance every one

:welcome: Get on that bike and cycle even if its to the end of the road, but the next day go round the corner and see whats there.
There are loads of people on here that were in your position not very long ago and cycling has changed all that. You will be surprised how quickly the miles fly past and the pounds drop off.

Enjoy the ride, do what's comfortable for you but keep pedalling .

Welcome Mart!
Go on your bike, enjoy the rides.
Don't worry about the bike collapsing under you ;) there are a few ex overweight members on here that have shared their weight loss journey aided by cycling, some will come along shortly to encourage and reassure.
Well done on taking the first step towards fitness.

Hello and :welcome:

Road bikes are a lot stronger than they look!! I too am over weight I need to lose about 4/5 stone. I got back on a bike after an 11 year break. All I can say is just get out there! Little and often is the best and you'll be surprised how quickly you will progress. When I first started I could barely do 2 miles 2 months after I did a 25 mile charity ride!!
Keep us posted with your progress. Good luck and happy cycling:bicycle:

Hi Mart and :welcome:.

I wouldn't worry too much about how thin the wheels look - bikes are generally stronger than they appear. For proof have a look at the video in this thread.

Also worth a look are these comments from member @gb155 on his blog about having slimmed down from 39 stone (no that's not a typing error!).

Enjoy your cycling and keep us posted with how you get on.

Why not have a charity weight loss for the next three months, for those who have said they want to lose weight through cycling?

As others have said, just get on the bike & don't give a second thought about targets. Don't be put off by what others on here say they have done/ are doing. They may just have been doing it longer than you. The only person you have to beat is yourself.

Hi everyone just a short update I have been on a couple of rides since my last post started on a 2 mile ride and all is going well apart from waiting on a new crankset as mine is slipping when pedling hard yesterday I did a nice 12mile ride and loved it very tiered though it was a lot longer than I had planned but hay I managed it and what doesn't kill you and all that but thank you to everyone as the encouragement really gave me the push I needed to get back on a bike! ^_^
