I don't have a lock yet. But I'm nit taking it to work as roads scare me. I've been out on it briefly, I need to go get it checked over. My dad had to realign the front tyre/brakes as it was a complete mess from the box but it's still not quite right, they have started to rub ever so slightly and I think the gears need tweaking. My dad is working in Miami again right now so I have to wait till I'm off and have chris around to watch our son so I can get it to a LBS.

I'll take pics too

The Foreshore between Cramond and Granton is good for doodling around on too.

Shame you can't get the bike set up sooner, though.

I'd offer to help but it might not be 'pc' :stop: .

Let us know when you get it all set up right and we'll arrange a "CC Edinburgh Christens Atara's Bike" ride .

........ as roads scare me.
Aye, that's what Jane Smart of this Forum used to say about a year ago . Now she does 10 mile Time Trials, rides with the Dunfermline Club and leads the pack on the CC Ecosse Forum Rides.

Be prepared - it could be you in 15 months' time

I need to find some nice long cycle routes do any exist that allow me to at least mostly avoid roads. I want to do a big long cycle rather than the measly 9 miles I have at my disposal just now

Do you fancy getting to Dunfermline? You could try the West Fife Cycleway, its an 11 mile tarmacked path which runs from the William Street car park (on the west side of Dunfermline) to Clackmannan which is completely off road. Its about the longest continuous off road tamacked path I know close to Edinburgh.

Well, now here's a challenge  ! How far do you want to go ? 30k ? 50k ?? 100k ???

For a start, go through D Mains, taking the NCN1 cycle path up Barnton Ave, carry on between the golf courses, cross Whitehouse Rd at the ped/cyclist lights), down to Cramond Brig.

Continuing on the Cycle path up to the entrance to Dalmeny estate on your right (where you can cycle around the Dalmeny estate and go to S Q'ferry for coffee/CAKE :hungry:) or go on to the Kirkliston Road, out towards Craigie's Farm ( coffee/CAKE :hungry:), on towards Kirkliston, with a wee detour left to the Airport .....

Och, there are loads of rides.

Let me know when you want to go and I'll be delighted/privileged to escort you :becool:. (The first time I rode with Jane, it was through our CC contact, so you could always PM her and get her considered opinion.)

Once you have a bit of confidence/experience/strength, the Dunfermline Cycle Route being mentioned by HLaB and others is just under 100k :bicycle: from D Mains ! It would be easy to make it up to the full distance - and it's one of the flatter routes around .

Everyone on here is so lovely. I'd be delighted to take you up on your offer once I am fully up and running. I am getting lights tomorrow, and a lock sometime soon after. I'll have to pick up a helmet too. I still need to get my bike looked over, I just never have time as I am always either with my son or working and if I have time it is too late for shops to be open. *sigh*

Taking it out for a wee spin tomorrow night to see how it feels. My gears have been tinkered with as they kept moving up and down independantly. Boo!

I am not really sure if I made a bad choice or not yet, the lack of suspension is very odd and I am not used to having to be so careful. Also, I am not exactly sure how or whta oar tof the Boardman is meant to be 'hybrid' as the skinny wee wheels don't seem appropriate for anything even remotely rough, not a fan of the quick release wheels either, but we shall see. I may have to swap between it and the old Raleigh so I can throw myself around a bit every so often.

Right, are you working all day Thursday/Friday ? If not, I can come over and have a look at some of those things for you , should you so wish, then you can take it to the bike shop if I can't sort it . Could probably manage Thurs eve too ...

It will take some time to get used to the new bike - it feels 'different', it has thinner tyres etc etc. Don't worry about those things just now. Once you have ridden it for a month or two and have got used to it, then you can decide if it is for you :wahhey: - or not for you xx(. By then you will probably be wanting another bike anyway (N= n + 1 :bicycle:).

If you want to 'throw yourself around every so often', as you say, do it on the (old) Raleigh - then you will appreciate both bikes :bicycle:.

If you are can make yourself available on Saturday, for a few hours between about 1130 and 1430, you could join up with the CC Ecosse Pedal for Cake, to which MDB has linked above. We will be coming along the cyclepath from Cramond Brig - golf courses - Barnton Ave - back of D Mains - Craigleith - Roseburn - Meadows - CAKE :hungry: :wahhey:, returning when all the cake is gone we need to be heading for THE WEST . Don't be afraid of being too slow, unsteady, traffic etc - no one gets left behind on a CC ride and you will be well protected if you are unsure or nervous. One of our number is a Cycle Trainer, after all ....

PM me if I can be of assistance ....
