Son visiting this weekend so pressies opened early. His to me include “100 Greatest Cycling Climbs” by Simon Warren. 100 Uk hills scored on scale to 10 but lowest score 3 and highest 11! Not sure whether he is trying to see me off. Surprisingly none in Cornwall so would have to travel to Devon to make a start. At 67 I will have to get started as soon as possible in the new Year. I’ve noticed that there is a follow on “Another 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs” so won’t run short if I get a taste for them.

Question, are the hills rated on 'difficulty' or on some other criteria?

Because if it is essentially a 100 hardest hills, it needs a re-write because there are some proper soft climbs in there!

Yes it's difficulty and I agree with you that some of the climbs aren't that tough but they'll be included because of popularity.

Simon Warren said:
The rating is an amalgamation of gradient, length, the likely hostility of the riding conditions and the condition of the surface. All the climbs are tough, therefore1/10 equals hard and 10/10 equals "it's all you can do to keep your bike moving".

The absence of any Cornish climbs is a surprise. When I was down there this summer (near Penzance) the area seemed to be full of really great climbs. Not the long draggy ones but loads of those 1-2km really steep ones that I have nightmares about

That latter quote is hilarious! The Cat and Fiddle must be a negative 5 unless it is blowing a hooley and with 4ft of snow on the ground then!

The second volume includes some Cornish hills. Two rated at 9/10 and one at 10/10.

Difficulty is just 1 criteria Rob - he rates on stuff like surroundings/feel etc.

I think Winnats is about 9.

Mow cop maybe 7?

I could go and get the book but I CBA.

Beleach na ba is the 11. There might be another 11 too.

Winnats he rates as 8 and Mow Cop as 9. For the record he has Cat & Fiddle as a 4 (ridden from the Macclesfield side). I've never ridden it so can't comment.

Great Dunn Fell in Cumbria is the other 11
