I was on my way to test out some new Vittoria Cross XG Pro tyres in the mud (still did after...no need for a small accident to ruin a good ride)

:bravo:

That's awesome! You've got my nomination for CycleChat's MTFU Award 2012.

With that, I would be so tempted to hang around that area same time of day & keep a look out for the car... I know that's no evidence of whether the BMW which you see next week with no wing mirror is the same one but odds are.. .

I'd certainly do that.

If I spotted a likely candidate I'd note the reg and notify the police, handing over the detached wing mirror so they could see whether it was the one ripped off the car and speak to the registered keeper. It wouldn't necessarily identify the driver but it's a step closer to doing so, who knows, he might just put his hands up to it.

Making off from the scene of an accident where injury has occurred should be taken more seriously than this.

Give them his head on a plate if you can- well, not literally, unless you really want to make a point.. they can't very well turn you down then ?

ok, as a practical matter you can't identify the car, and there are no witnesses to conveniently give a reg number. Being realistic that's any investigation into the "fail to stop" offence over before it's begun.

Nevertheless, it's an injury RTC and they have a lawful duty to record it. Make sure they have recorded the incident and issued you with an incident number, URN, or whatever your local dibble may call it. They have a lawful duty to abide by H.O. counting rules for crimes and recordable incidents, and if it looks like someone's cuffed this away simply because it ain't likely to go anywhere you should complain in writing to the Chief Constable about it. If the complaint is in writing to an ACPO officer it's auditable and can't just be cuffed away or excuses made.

They could at least speak to whomever distributes BMW parts to let them know if one is ordered for a silver BMW in that area in the next few days

They could, but unfortunately this tend to fit into the category of 'Now we know it was you' instead of 'Now we can prove it was you'. He wouldn't even have to give an easy lie regarding the wing mirror ('someone knocked it off in a car park') he could just say nothing, and CPS would never run it as a missing wing mirror doesn't equate to enough evidence to prove its him.

This isn't the polices 'fault', it's our criminal justice system - which is envied by many other countries... apparently...

And for what it's worth, almost exactly the same thing happened to one of my colleagues on his way into work. A mini knocked him off, wrecked his bike, gave him some gravel rash and didn't stop. He didn't get the reg, but left damage down the side of it. He didn't bother even recording the RTC as he knew it was going nowhere.

The problem is that people see a bobby running things through in his head, seeing its got nowhere to go and saying so, but what they believe from that is that we aren't interested. We are - we are just limited.

Hope the wounds heal soon mate.

To knock someone off and not stop is the mark of a lowlife.

Not go all CSI and use a combo of who orders BMW wing mirror and forensically matching the paint from both mirror and car? Or have I been watching too much crime drama...
